The Macleay Valley is situated on the mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia. The Macleay River starts as the Gara River in the Northern tablelands north of Guyra, cascades off the Escarpment of the Great Dividing Range at Apsley, Wollomombi and Dangar Falls , then meanders east to the Pacific Ocean at Scott's Head.

The Macleay Valley is blessed with a wide range of different Vegetation types and many National Parks that allow easy access to them. Use the Wigay Aboriginal Culture Park to learn which of the many native trees, shrubs and plants are used by Aboriginal people for food and medicinal purposes.
The broad range of habitats in the Macleay Valley allow for a wide diversity of animals.The NSW BioNet Atlas can be searched to show animals, plants, fungi, communities, threats and endangered species in the Kempsey Local Government Area. It shows that 569 fauna species from 174 different families (including marine species) have been recorded in the shire to date, including: 329 bird species, 42 amphibian species, 98 mammal species; and 60 reptile species. Many of these are listed on the Fauna page.
